               ---Alexander               Pope

               Tell               Me               What               It               Takes
Did               you               ever               have               a               boss               who               was               NEVER               impressed               with               anything               you               did?

No               matter               how               grand               your               accomplishment,               he               just               wasn't               moved.

It's               very               frustrating               when               we               try               as               hard               as               we               can,               exceed               expectations               as               much               as               we               can               and               achieve               more               than               was               ever               imagined---only               to               be               snubbed               with,               "You               still               have               room               to               improve."
Inside               the               Head               of               an               Unimpressed               Boss
Why               are               some               supervisors               hard               to               impress?

Or               worse,               why               do               some               ignore               our               positive               accomplishments?

After               all,               it's               counter-productive,               it               lowers               morale,               and               it's               rude.

Here               are               just               a               few               examples               about               what               might               be               going               on               in               the               mind               of               your               boss               when               you               thought               you               did               a               great               job,               but               she               didn't               throw               you               a               parade.
               1.

Power               Play.

Maybe               he's               not               comfortable               with               giving               compliments---he               might               believe               that               giving               compliments               is               a               sign               of               weakness.
               2.

Quality               is               Relative.

Maybe               she               is               a               perfectionist               and               really               does               think               your               work               has               room               to               improve,               even               though               you               think               it's               great.
               3.

You               did               what,               now?

Maybe               he               is               too               busy               to               notice               what               you're               doing               or               not               doing.
               4.

Emotional               Wreck.

Maybe               she               just               doesn't               care               and               has               personal               or               professional               problems               that               are               not               allowing               her               to               notice               what               is               positive.
               5.

Fragile               Ego.

Maybe               he               is               intimidated               by               your               hard               work               and               accomplishments.

Worse               yet,               running               circles               around               him               is               making               him               look               inept.
               6.

Envious.

Maybe               she's               jealous               that               someone               younger,               newer               to               the               company,               (or               whatever)               is               tearin               it               up               and               getting               lots               of               attention.
               7.

Micro-Manager.

Maybe               he               knows               he               could               have               done               it               better               and               he               should               have               done               it               himself.
               8.

Paranoia.

Maybe               he               feels               that               a               compliment               might               be               taken               the               wrong               way.

In               our               litigious               society,               simply               smiling               at               someone               the               wrong               way               can               turn               into               a               million-dollar               sexual               harrassment               lawsuit.

Can               you               blame               a               supervisor               if               he's               a               little               paranoid               and               overprotective               when               it               comes               to               dishing               out               compliments?
               9.

Old-School               Motivation.

Maybe               he               likes               to               give               praise               and               acknowledgement               when               the               entire               project               is               done               and               the               money               is               in               the               bank.....celebrating               too               soon               breeds               complacency               and               laziness.
               10.

Get               A               Life.

Maybe               she's               just               not               that               into               you.

Case               Study:               Dennis               is               his               Boss's               Menace
Dennis               was               a               very               hard               worker---he               wanted               to               succeed               and               he               wanted               it               bad.

He               was               a               creative               go-getter,               and               as               such,               he               was               always               dreaming               up               wonderful               ideas.

Then,               he'd               take               care               of               all               the               logistics               so               the               idea               would               become               a               reality.

To               most               managers,               Dennis               was               a               dream               employee--his               current               boss               saw               things               differently.
There               was               a               time               when               Dennis               created               a               new               online               database               which               monitored               the               career-               pathing               and               succession               planning               details               of               all               6,000               of               his               company's               employees---Human               Resources               loved               him               for               it,               but               his               boss               merely               said,               'That's               nice....'
Then               there               was               the               time               when               Dennis               flew               all               the               way               to               Berlin               to               meet               with               a               customer               who               was               thinking               about               changing               vendors.

Dennis               convinced               the               customer               to               stay,               and               he               was               able               to               save               their               $2               Million               account.

The               sales               team               loved               him               for               hit,               but               his               boss               said,               "I               would've               called               him               and               saved               $5,000.00               in               travel               expenses."
Finally,               there               was               a               time               Dennis               developed               a               creative               philanthropic               program               that               impacted               the               lives               of               hundreds               of               welfare               families.

It               was               such               a               rage,               local               and               national               media               picked               up               the               story               and               it               turned               out               to               be               wonderful               PR               for               his               company.

Corporate               Communications               loved               him               for               it,               but               his               boss               said,               "We're               not               in               the               philanthropy               or               welfare               business,               were               in               the               Widget               business."

               No               Good               Deed               Goes               Unpunished
Dennis               was               extremely               frustrated               as               you               might               imagine.

Everybody               idolized               him               except               his               boss,               and               his               boss               was               the               one               who               ultimately               approved               his               promotions               and               raises,               not               his               'groupies.'               Unable               to               take               the               neglect               and               perfectionist               attitude               any               longer,               Dennis               gave               his               boss               2               weeks               notice.
Reason               #11:               What               you're               doing               isn't               helping               your               boss               look               good.
On               his               way               out               the               door,               Dennis               asked               his               boss               why               he               never               acknowledged               anything               he               ever               did               as               being               wonderful               or               great.

His               boss               replied,               "Because               everything               you               did               that               was               so               wonderful               was               never               in               your               job               description.

You               were               always               too               distracted               with               side               projects               that               I               never               asked               you               to               pick               up,               and               you               did               your               'regular               duties'               only               fairly               well.

Here's               some               advice,               if               you               want               to               impress               your               next               boss,               do               what               he               asks               you               to               do               and               do               it               very               well.

Then               you'll               get               the               praise               and               recognition               you               deserve."
And               so               we               have               an               addition               to               the               list               of               10               reasons               why               bosses               might               not               be               recognizing               your               efforts.

Maybe               it's               not               that               they're               perfectionists,               or               shy,               or               jealous,               or               emotional               wrecks---               maybe               they'd               rather               see               you               do               the               work               they've               actually               ASKED               you               to               do.

Our               bosses               don't               want               us               to               chase               after               the               superfluous               flashy               projects               that               benefit               other               supervisors,               they               want               us               to               make               our               goals               and               exceed               our               personal               quotas.

Afterall,               your               goals               are               part               of               the               their               goals               which               they               have               to               report               to               their               supervisors.
If               You               Want               to               Get               Noticed,               Make               Your               Boss               Look               Like               a               Genius
In               this               regard,               remember               another               quote               from               Alexander               Pope:               "See               Dionysius,               (how               he)               Homer's               Thoughts               refine;               And               call               new               Beauties               forth               from               ev'ry               line!"               Dionysis               had               a               goal               in               life.....it               wasn't               to               gain               fame               and               fortune.

It               wasn't               to               selfishly               draw               attention               to               himself.

It               was               to               help               others               understand,               appreciate               and               admire               the               work               of               Homer.

In               other               words,               he               made               Homer               look               better.

Your               mission               at               work               is               similar.....make               your               boss               look               better.

If               you               can               do               that,               you'll               mitigate               or               even               eliminate               all               11               reasons               for               not               noticing               you               or               giving               you               the               praise               you               deserve.
