About 'jobs in school'|Action Now In The News – Violence, Jobs & School Closings

From               having               been               punished               in               school               I               know               what               it               is               like.

When               I               was               first               in               school               the               teachers               still               paddled               you,               but               then               halfway               through               the               school               years               it               was               made               against               the               law               to               paddle.

Because               the               schools               could               no               longer               paddle,               they               found               other               forms               of               punishment               to               discipline               the               students.

One               of               those               methods               was               detention.

The               school               I               talk               about               in               this               article               was               called               the               Yulee               Hornets.

It               was               a               middle               school               (Junior               High).

Yulee               and               Florida               can               both               be               located               with               Google               Maps               searching               for               the               zip               code               32097.
There               was               two               forms               of               detention,               after               school               and               in               school.
When               they               ran               the               in               school               detention               you               were               separated               from               the               class               rooms,               and               placed               into               one               single               room.

In               that               room               you               had               all               the               assignments               from               your               teachers               to               perform.

Because               of               how               the               class               room               was               controlled,               you               could               only               do               your               work.
The               way               the               after               school               detention               worked,               is               after               school               closes               every               day               you               had               to               stay               behind               and               attend               a               class.

In               that               class               your               assignment               was               to               start               on               a               certain               page               in               a               dictionary,               and               start               copying               it               down               on               paper.

This               would               last               for               either               30               minutes               or               for               one               hour.
               The               After               School               Detention.

"Your               in               trouble               now."
For               some               reason               the               person               in               charge               of               the               detention               would               not               show               me               how               to               do               the               assignment.

All               I               could               get               out               of               her               was,               "You               know               why               your               here,               and               you               know               what               to               do,               because               you               are               always               in               here."               Having               never               done               after               school               detention               I               was               lost.
Another               serious               problem               was               the               hour.

My               parents               did               not               know               I               was               forced               to               stay               after               school.

Not               only               that,               my               parents               did               not               have               a               running               car               at               the               time.

My               parents               were               poor,               and               barley               had               the               money               to               maintain               the               car               they               had.
I               hanged               around               the               school               for               about               four               hours,               but               then               was               forced               to               leave               the               school               grounds.

My               house               from               the               school               is               about               30               miles               away.

From               having               been               instructed               in               the               math               class,               I               knew               it               was               going               to               take               me               about               ten               hours               to               get               home.

But               I               had               to               make               a               move               for               it.
After               walking               about               one               mile               my               parents               pulled               up               on               the               side.

They               had               borrowed               someone's               car.

Then               I               was               in               trouble               for               walking,               and               in               trouble               because               I               was               put               in               detention.
I               was               assigned               detention               because               I               was               about               30               seconds               late               for               class.

If               you               could               see               the               school               grounds,               you               would               see               my               two               classes               being               on               the               opposite               sides.

Usually               when               I               make               a               run               for               it               I               will               get               in               the               class               room               with               about               a               minute               to               spare               before               the               bell               (five               minutes               to               change.).

I               have               forgotten               what               slowed               me               down               that               day,               but               I               was               late.
My               experience               is               the               after               school               detentions               cause               harm,               and               not               good.

It               hurts               families               financially.

If               the               parents               clock               out               early               to               go               and               get               the               kid,               then               they               lose               hours               and               also               lose               jobs.

It               also               costs               money               to               pick               them               up               and               bring               them               home.

Why               do               we               have               school               buses?
               The               In               School               Detention.

"Busted!"
The               thing               I               remember               the               most               was               what               the               other               students               would               say,               "I               love               coming               to               the               detention.

It               gets               me               out               of               the               class               rooms.

And               it's               easy               to               get               in               here,               all               I               have               to               do               is               be               late               for               class               or               chew               gum."               Yes               they               broke               the               rules               so               they               could               be               punished.

You               would               be               surprised               how               fast               a               teacher               will               slap               detention               on               you               for               gum,               or               not               being               in               your               seat               before               the               bell               rang.
It's               the               same               thing               with               suspension.

They               break               the               rules               to               be               forced               home               for               a               few               days.

They               would               skip               class,               because               they               would               be               suspended               for               it.

Legally               skipping!
I               admit               I               was               more               comfortable               in               the               detention               class,               then               in               the               class               rooms.

It               was               quiet               and               I               had               all               my               school               work               in               front               of               me.

I               was               able               to               work               at               my               own               pas,               and               choose               the               work               I               wanted               to               do               first.
               It's               Finally               Over.

"I               can               go               home               now."
I               remembered               after               writing               this               article               that               I               attended               both               the               after               school               and               in               school               detention               during               my               8th               grade               year.
The               last               time               I               was               punished               in               after               school               detention,               was               back               in               the               9th               or               10th               grade.

Me               and               about               a               quarter               of               the               school               got               caught               smoking               cigarettes               just               before               riding               the               bus               home.

It               was               an               in               school               detention               program.

It               was               quiet               most               of               the               time,               and               I               was               even               able               to               finish               a               good               book               (reading               was               rare               for               me.).
I               think               that               after               school               detention               only               hurts               families               and               does               not               discipline.

And               I               think               the               in-school               detention               gives               a               kid               a               break               from               the               tormenting               class               rooms.

IT               all               depends               on               the               detention               and               school               and               it               also               depends               on               the               student.
