About 'gaap jobs'|HP beats the Street in Q2; confirms plans to cut 27,000 jobs as Q3 guidance misses








               As               a               retired               Accountant               from               a               public               school               system               with               25+               years               of               experience,               I               have               five               tips               from               
               hindsight               that               may               be               helpful,               should               you               be               considering               an               accounting               career               in               this               field.

Accountancy               is               a               respectable               job               and               pays               a               decent               salary,               especially               if               you               have               at               least               a               BS               (4               year)               degree               in               accounting/business               administration.

If               you               become               a               certified               public               accountant               (CPA),               you               can               expect               a               10               to               15               percent               increase!

Most               school               districts               do               not               require               their               accountant               to               be               a               CPA,               though               it               probably               will               be               required               in               the               near               future.
               Tip               #1               -               Personality               Traits               of               an               Accountant
               Obviously,               an               accountant               must               enjoy               working               with               numbers,               as               that               is               90%               of               the               job;               journal               entries,               balance               sheets,               income               statements,               expense               reports,               grants,               and               everything               else               deals               with               numbers.
               An               accountant               must               be               detail-oriented!

The               ability               to               analyze               numbers,               build               and               manage               numerous               local,               state,               and               federal               budgets               or               funds,               each               within               certain               parameters,               is               a               key               requirement!

Critical               thinking               will               be               useful               also
               Patience               is               truly               a               virtue               when               working               as               an               accountant               within               a               school               district.

Many               forms               you               need               to               do               your               job               will               come               from               a               variety               of               people               and               school               locations.

It               must               be               a               team               effort               (in               a               perfect               world)               to               successfully               manage               a               finance               office.

I               have               news               for               you…there               is               no               perfect               world!
               Other               traits               preferred               include               dependability,               honesty,               determination,               willingness               to               continuous               learning,               tolerance               to               change.
               Tip               #2               -               Skills               Needed               for               Accountants
               A               successful               accountant               will               be               efficient               in               computer               skills,               calculator               use,               and               other               office               equipment.

Math               skills               are               critical.

Good               communication               skills,               written               and               oral               are               required               to               explain               details,               instructions,               procedures,               and               results               to               many               levels               of               employees               within               the               school               network,               including               auditors.

Trouble-shooting,               detecting,               and               correcting               error               skills               will               also               prove               helpful               on               a               daily               basis.

The               ability               to               deal               with               major               stress               is               important               also!
               Tip               #3               -               Keep               Up-to-Date               on               Various               Changes               as               Necessary
               There               will               be               annual               changes               in               rules               and               procedures               at               the               school               district,               local,               federal,               and               state               levels               that               you               must               adhere               to,               to               meet               annual               audit               regulations.

You               will               also               be               required               to               attend               classes,               workshops,               etc.

to               learn               new               or               improve               on               job               skills               as               required.
               Tip               #4               -               Know               the               GAAP               (Generally               Accepted               Accounting               Principles)
               Every               accountant               must               have               the               ability               to               study               and               adhere               to               the               yearly               generally               accepted               accounting               principles               (GAAP)               in               order               to               pass               an               independent               audit.

GAAP's               change               at               minimum               yearly,               and               are               the               framework               that               standardizes               and               regulates               accounting               definitions,               assumptions,               and               methods,               providing               the               assumption               of               consistency               in               the               preparation               of               annual               audits               and               financial               statements               from               year               to               year               for               comparison               purposes.
               Tip               #               5               -               If               You               Dislike               Accounting-               Get               Out
               This               tip               is               crucial               to               your               health               and               well-being.

If               you               acquire               an               accounting               position,               and               within               a               few               weeks,               months,               to               a               year               and               discover               you               do               not               enjoy               going               to               work               every               day,               please               do               not               linger               in               your               position               for               years!

No               matter               what               salary               you               make               or               what               the               expectations               of               family               and               friends               are,               go               ahead               and               seek               another               career.

The               consequences               of               working               in               a               position               that               requires               more               of               you               than               one               person               can               do,               will               lead               to               depression,               burn               out,               high               stress               levels               and               will               risk               your               health.

It               is               not               worth               it!

Being               happy,               passionate,               and               feeling               as               though               you               are               making               a               difference               is               what               matters               most               in               your               chosen               work!
